EXCLUSIVE: My BEST VIDEOS on INKING!
Learn to HOW use the BRUSH + CROWQUILL like a PRO!
I remember how hard it was to learn how to ink COMICS and ILLUSTRATIONS when I first started out as an artist. The tools seemed foreign to me even though I felt I could draw. Well now I want to share TWO EXCLUSIVE videos that will demystify inking for you and help you TRAIN to become a BETTER ARTIST.
The Way of the Brush.
As with anything consistent practice is needed to excel in learning.
First, WATCH THIS VIDEO…
…as an introduction to what a brush can and can’t do. Now that you have an idea of what can be done, why not give it a shot.
As a way to get the ball rolling, here’s a training sheet for you to print out followed by the recommended supplies.
For this assignment here’s what you’ll need:
2-ply bristol Strathmore 400 or 500 series- Smooth for this lesson
Winsor & Newton Series 7 #2 or #3, Raphael #8404 #2, or a Scharff Series 400 #1 or #3 Brush
A way to INKJET color print onto the 2-ply bristol
Now you can follow along step-by-step by watching…
…my 1 HOUR COURSE on INKING with a BRUSH!
Now you might ask yourself, why so many lines. Well, it’s because it’s as good a place as any to get down your motor skills, your hand control. By the time you work from top to bottom, you can see how comfortable you feel inking a value-rendered drawing. I chose this image, because instead of comics, I believe we need to see light first. From there we can simplify.
As you might imagine, for you to get better at inking...you should try inking the lines and image on this page at least once a day for a month. Pin the results of your day 7, your day 14, 21 and 29 up on the wall as you go.
Can you see the difference?
BUT WAIT…there’s MORE!
Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water...The Quill arises! Born out of the feathers of birds comes millennia-old sturdy steal of the scribe. Used largely in the 19th and 20th century for writing as well as illustration, the quill is a great tool for expression.
